Chicago, IL – Beth Spaulding was the only student to attend an intermediate level Yoga class taught by senior teacher Nellie Sears last Wednesday, at Karma Power Cardio-Union Yoga Studio. Nellie prides herself on being one of the most spiritually advanced teachers in the midwest, having studied with guru Pattabhi Dasikayengar.
“I think Nellie was upset that nobody else showed up,” commented her sole student, “Even before class, instead of talking with me, it was like she was was talking at me. The way she told me to chant to invoke the guru, it was just cold.”
As class began, Nellie further distanced herself from her student by addressing Beth as though she was only one out of a room full of students.
“The way she told me to chant to invoke the guru, it was just cold.”
“She was suddenly really loud, even though she was three feet away, going, ‘Inhale, Akem, Dway, shat, shatwari. Now exhale! Akem, Dway, Shat, Shatwari!'”.
At one point the student Beth needed to use the bathroom. While she was gone from the room, the teacher continued to mechanically dictate poses and count in Sanskrit.
“I’m just saying, it didn’t feel like she was teaching me, it felt like she was teaching at me,” said Beth.
